Problem: CBS 62 Detroit/CW50 Detroit needed holiday cards to send to its clients and advertisers.
Story: When it was time to print Christmas cards for their clients, Jeff O’Brien, senior graphic designer at CBS62 Detroit/CW50 Detroit, knew he could count on Company Folders.
“We have used Company Folders for the past two years for printing our Christmas cards,” O’Brien said. “I originally found Company Folders searching on the Internet for a printer that could do foil stamping and embossing.”
He sees Company Folders as a one-stop-shop.
As a graphic designer, O’Brien sets much of the design himself ahead of contacting Company Folders but still consults with members of the Print Project Team to finalize the details.
“We worked on a design that we liked, then we brought [Print Project Director] Jennifer Grubb into the conversation for ideas on different printing effects that would bring the card to life,” O’Brien stated. “…She helped with letting us know the different options and types of effects to put on the design that was already made.”
This year, they chose to print a custom printed product with four color process and one embossed area printed on side one of 14pt C1S Semi-Gloss stock, coated with Aqueous Soft-Touch and Spot UV. Four color process printed on side two. This is a modification of our custom greeting card, which is only available with four color process.
“Working with a printer that is knowledgable and having worked with Jennifer for the past two years made the ordering process very smooth,” O’Brien said. “…It’s nice working with people who know what they’re talking about.”
“[It has] versatility. They can pretty much do anything right in-house,” he said. “They’re a printer that doesn’t have to farm out portions they can’t handle themselves, and that’s nice.”
“Having worked with Company Folders for three years, we have used many different effects from foil stamping, special coatings, embossing, and Soft-Touch [coating] with great success. That is why we keep coming back.”

Per Grubb’s suggestion, the Christmas tree and gifts are coated with a velvety Soft-Touch coating, while the ornaments and gift tags are coated with a smooth, shiny Spot UV to make the program names stand out.
“I enjoy working with Jeff and his CBS62 Detroit colleagues because they start with a great design and look to me for ways to really make it shine,” Grubb said. “It’s always a pleasure to work with clients to make truly remarkable printed products, and it makes my job rewarding.”
And the final product didn’t disappoint.
“The high-quality of the printing with the Soft-Touch [coating] and embossing really make the card stand out,” O’Brien noted.
The greeting cards are the only product O’Brien orders from Company Folders because there isn’t a need for many printed products. In fact, he said they did consider digital cards, but management liked to send out tangible items, making the feel of the card as important as it looks.
“Especially in the last few years, we’ve been looking at ways to jazz things up like Soft-Touch [coating] and other different elements,” O’Brien said, noting last year was the first time he used the velvet-like coating. “…That just gives it a little more of a touchy kind of effect that you usually don’t see in custom printed stuff.”
He said he would recommend Company Folders to others because he always receives a high-quality product on schedule.
